las vegas:day four

our final day in vegas we met up with a friend of dave's from college who lives in the area. i don't think they had seen each other since their college days and they had fun catching up over a yummy breakfast buffet (by the way, despite the rumors, there are NOT cheap buffets in vegas anymore...at least not on the strip). since we payed a pretty penny for the buffet you better believe i ate A LOT (besides, breakfast foods are my favorite)! it was soo good! then we walked down the strip to see the conservatory at the bellagio. as we had been told by a few people, it was absolutely beautiful!
the lobby of the bellagio. i thought the glass flowers on the ceiling were beautiful!
the conservatory was all decked out for the chinese new year and each of the dragons represented an element.
then we cruised back to m&m world and caught the free 3D movie. it was cute and well, free!
and suddenly it was time to head back to the airport. this little getaway was just what we needed. we relaxed and did so many fun things. but really the best part was just being together. cheesy, but so true! it was nice to just be able to focus on each other. and can i just say that i LOVED holding hands with my husband for 4 days straight! such a simple thing, but so wonderful! nowadays we are usually lugging a baby carrier and trying to keep hold of a toddler and our moments of holding hands are brief. but for 4 days everywhere we walked we held hands and i loved it! we were so excited to see the kids! it seemed a lot longer than 4 days. we returned home to sick kids. when we left they were sick and we were hoping they would be better by the time we saw them again, but unfortunately emma was diagnosed with an ear infection that morning (and logan followed suit a few days later). it was sooo good to see them, squeeze them and kiss them! we're so grateful to our families who made it possible!

las vegas: day three

i'm finally back to blogging! all my free time for the past week and a half has been spent studying for a fitness test i took this past friday (and hopefully passed. fingers crossed. i'll know in 4-6 weeks). it was great to be learning something new and stretching myself, although it's been a long time since i was a student and i thought my brain was going to explode! anyway, back to our vegas trip!
on friday we slept in again (and i feel like that is definitely blog worthy)! i think i slept until 10 am! bless those blackout shades. it was amazing! kristi was nice enough to let us borrow her car while she was working and we headed to the las vegas temple.
it was beautiful and the green grass and flowers were such a contrast to the area surrounding it. we enjoyed a wonderful session and spent a lot of time enjoying the stunning celestial room and talking about some of our insights. both of us commented on the contrast of light. we had spent the last couple of days on the strip which was all lit up and quite dazzling. but none of it could compare to the pure and beautiful light we experienced in the temple (both literally and figuratively). it reminded me of the scripture in isaiah that refers to the temple as a place of refuge from the storm. the contrast was so blatant and it was a wonderful reminder.

i just found this picture online and i thought it was too cool not to share!

after the temple we met kristi for dinner at a pizza place in the new york new york hotel. the pizza was so yummy!
that night we were lucky enough to get to see david copperfield (for free)! his show was pretty amazing. i don't think i could tell how he did any of his tricks (including the one where he made 13 audience members disappear from the stage...they were under a big sheet for part of it...to the back of the theater). dave and i actually got to help out with his 2nd trick. it was pretty fun to be part of the show! and then we even got to stay after the show with a small group to preview a new trick he was thinking of adding to a future show. his show really was cool!

las vegas: day two

our second day in las vegas was fantastic!
the highlights of the day were:
sleeping in
lunch at the noodle shop in mandalay bay
visiting the hoover dam
in-n-out
seeing the blue man group

before lunch we went to the shark reef, an aquarium, in mandalay bay. there were some cool things, but we were glad we didn't pay full price (kristi got us a discount) because it definitely wasn't worth $18 a person. i sure love the jelly fish! and the octopus was pretty cool.
dave's boss has a culinary connection with the executive chef at the noodle shop in mandalay bay and let the chef know we were coming for lunch. when we arrived the chef came out and introduced himself. he asked if we would like him to prepare a menu for us and of course we agreed. lunch was absolutely delicious (and beautifully plated)!
after lunch kristi picked us up and we headed to the hoover dam. we were able to walk across the bypass bridge that opened in late 2010. it is nearly 2,000 feet long and almost 900 feet above the colorado river. it was pretty amazing and offered a beautiful view of the dam.

at the border line of nevada and arizona
it is incredible what people are able to engineer and build.

i have to admit the whole time we were at the dam i kept thinking about the movie "fools rush in." maybe i should be embarrassed to admit that, but i like the movie! the desert landscape is so beautiful. definitely different than we're used to in colorado, but striking and beautiful in its own way.
the beautiful sunset on our drive back to the strip (with a detour at in-n-out. yum!)
the strip in the distance
on our way back into town kristi dropped us off at the venetian hotel to see the blue man group. my friend wendie worked one of her connections and was able to hook us up with tickets to the show. it was awesome! totally random and fun. i didn't know that they don't speak at all in the show (or after the show for that matter). it was amazing what they could communicate with their facial expressions, especially their eyes. i was so happy we got to see the show because it was the one that dave really wanted to see.
some of the band members that play during the show
the grand canal in the venetian.
i still can't get over how incredible all of these hotels are. seriously, a canal with gondolas in a hotel?! it's no wonder hotels (and just visiting hotels) in this city can actually be considered a tourist attraction.

las vegas: day one

we had such an amazing trip! i feel like it was not only a birthday present for dave, but a present for me too! it was so nice to escape reality for bit and just enjoy being together and reconnecting. it was also nice to sleep in (thank you black-out shades), relax and not have to share bites of my meal with a begging toddler! our first morning in the hotel we were awoken by a crying child in the hall. dave and i both sat up in bed, trying to figure out which kid it was, only to remember that they weren't there and it was someone else's child! we both promptly laid back down and went back to sleep! with that said, we missed the kids like crazy! but with that said, we were sure glad to be on vacation alone! of course i took a ton of pictures, so to make it more manageable (for you and me), i'll do a post about each day.
one of my old co-workers, when he saw on facebook that i was in vegas commented, "what's a good mormon girl like you doing in vegas?!" i assured him no drinking or gambling, but there was still plenty to do! we arrived early wednesday morning and headed to the luxor hotel to see the titanic exhibit. it had been in denver a year or so ago and we missed it and were excited to get the chance to see it. it was incredible! i can't believe the things they have found still in tact, despite being in the water for so many years. as you walked through the different rooms of the exhibit, they made it look like you were in different parts of the ship (third class sleeping rooms, first class grand staircase etc). one part was even made to look like the promenade at night with stars and cool air. the whole exhibit was amazing! we were so grateful for dave's aunt kristi, who not only got us a discount at mgm grand (where she works), but also got us discounts on exhibits at some of the other hotels!
all of the hotels had decorations up for chinese new year. the mgm grand had a show in the lobby with incredible kung fu performers and drummers. the way these guys bounced around and threw each other around was amazing! it was absolutely beautiful!
each of the dragons below is made up of 2 guys. at this point they were standing on pillars that were at least 7-8 feet high. they jumped around (and threw each other) from pillar to pillar, not only without wobbling, but while staying in tact as a dragon. i wish this picture showed better how amazing it was.
after checking into our room and taking a much needed rest (we had to wake up at 4am) we headed to the new york new york hotel to have dinner at greenberg & sons deli. our brother in law recommended it and it was really good. check out all that meat!
i don't even know what to say about my hair in these pictures! oh well, it was an early morning and
i'm just lucky not to be wearing a hat, although maybe i should have. after dinner we cruised the strip.
in the cosmopolitan hotel one of the stores had all these old sewing machines on display in their front window. i thought they were so cool.
the cosmopolitan hotel also had a 3 story chandelier. it was really pretty. they also had a red stiletto that i couldn't resist taking a picture in.
the forum shops at caesar's palace
can i just say it is amazing that so many high end stores can all survive within just a couple of miles of one another. i can't believe how many gucci, louis vuitton, prada, fendi etc. stores we saw.
it had been a long time since i had been to vegas and i must say it wasn't quite as scummy as i remember. barely any trashy pictures on the ground and not as many people handing out trashy pamphlets. there were still some scandalous ads for some shows, but i was pleasantly surprised. and of course there was some fantastic people watching. wow, that's all i can say (like seeing some hookers and their pimp. and he looked like a pimp!). actually, walking along the strip was pretty spectacular. there is something about all those bright lights.
the bellagio fountain shows. by far my favorite thing about the strip. they were magical and i could have watched them all night. "time to say goodbye" was my favorite one we saw.
and then we went back to the hotel and literally fell into bed!
